Dr. Michael Dadson states, “there are many forms of depression, and
a variety of therapies are available to treat depression”.
How does gender bias relate to
depression?
"There are several differences when we refer to male depression
than that of women", notes Doctor Michael Dadson.
It is important to understand "depression is accepted and
considered socially normal for women to have vulnerability, and
emotional social connections. However, for men, emotional
vulnerability for men is not common. A boy's childhood, is filled with
messages such as "boys don't cry, toughen up, suck it up or, you cry
like a girl' " identifies Dr Michael Dadson.
Depression is a mood disorder that may occur out of the blue, or
after a death or personal loss. Feeling sad, guilty, hopeless, worthless are also common. It can be
difficult to function in your day to day life if you are affected by depression and counselling can be
extremely helpful relates Dr Michael Dadson.
What is depression?
According to Psychology Today "Depression also interferes with concentration, motivation, and other aspects of everyday functioning".
"It is normal to feel sad, or down once in a while",
notes Dr. Michael Dadson.
The Canadian Mental Health Association states "if these sad feelings last for more than a couple of weeks and you start noticing that it’s affecting your life in a big way, you may be suffering from an illness called depression".
