Firefighters and other first responders are often exposed to traumatic incidences by the very nature of their job.
According to Frontiers in psychology "During the last decade, the integration of animals into psychotherapy and health care has greatly increased". Initially, this type of intervention targeted seniors, those who were disabled and children. However, more recently, interventions using animals for those affected by PTSD (in treatment), has increased.
Various trauma treatment programs now have adapted programs using dogs to support PTSD patients. The results of these programs indicate promising gains
