Self Determination Therapy

                                            Photo: Jared Rice

Self-determination theory (SDT) maintains that an understanding of human motivation requires a consideration of innate psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness.

We discuss the SDT concept of needs as it relates to previous need theories, emphasizing that needs specify the necessary conditions for psychological growth, integrity, and well-being.

In the video below, Dr. Dadson discusses the various types of therapy used in counselling.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment

Psychology Today on the most helpful therapies for PTSD Treatments.

                                                                        Photo:  Jonathan Rados

Studies show "trauma-focused treatments for PTSD are preferred by most patients".

A study recently published in Frontiers in Psychology, reviews several forms of treatment for PTSD and also provides insights into patients that prefer various treatments.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and prolonged exposure therapy are the two most preferred treatment forms overall. The study indicates older patients prefer psychodynamic treatments..

Dr. Michael Dadson (Mike Dadson) states, “Symptoms of trauma usually start within three months of a traumatic incident. It has been reported, in rare cases, that symptoms of PTSD may only occur after a number of years. It is not uncommon for symptoms to be present for a short period, then disappear, only to return again.”

1. Overccoming behaviours that are self-destructive.

2. Manging your emotions and overcoming anger issues.

3. Reducing your risk of physical health issues.

Dr. Michael Dadosn discusses unresolved trauma in the video above.

There are 3 phases to trauma treatment.

1. Establishing a theraputic relationship between the therapist the client while developing an understanding the client's current life context and relationships.

2. Through titration and imaginal exposure therapy to process the traumatic memory.

3. The third phase involves greiving the effect of the trauma.

Dr. Dadson has discovered through his research that men respond well to group therapy. Dr. Dadson provides an overview of his group therapy program at his Langley clinic, Gentle Currents Therapy. Read about the Men's Group Program here.

In the short video below, Dr. Michael Dadson provides an overview of the effects of PTSD, and why treatment is important.

Improving Outcomes With Autism

A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics, significant benefits were shown with a teaching program for parental engagement with babies identified as high risk for autism spectrum disorder. (ASD).

                                                                         Photo: Shirota Yuri

Studies have shown intervention at 2 years of life, can improve outcomes for children.

The study states in a "clinical trial of 103 infants showing early behavioral signs of ASD, preemptive intervention led to a statistically significant reduction in the severity of ASD behaviors across early childhood. Infants who received the preemptive intervention had lower odds of meeting diagnostic criteria for ASD (7%) than those who received usual care (21%) at age 3 years."

If you are dealing with challenges around a child affected by ASD and are looking for coping skills and support contact Dr. Mike Dadson here.

Your Teen and Social Media

Here is a great article from the New Your Times (NYT), on the affects of social media on teenage girls.

                                                                            Photo: Merakist

The NYT article states "For kids, developing a healthier relationship with Instagram and other platforms can be tricky." Further, the NYT notes "The Wall Street Journal revealed last week that researchers at Instagram had studied for years how its photo-sharing app affects young users and found that it can be particularly harmful to teenage girls, news that alarmed parents and lawmakers."

To view Facebook's (which owns Instagram),  statement follow this link.

Instagram noted "The question on many people’s minds is if social media is good or bad for people. The research on this is mixed; it can be both."

The importance of parental supervision when it comes to social media cannot be overstated. #Mikedadson #Langley #counsellor

Improving your Ability to See Everything Around You

How Nurture Shapes Experience and Experience Shapes Your Brain.

In developmental circles, nurture has become a label for life experiences that occur after conception. Experience or nurture dramatically alters the information entering your nervous system - you and I literally see what we are taught to see.

Intention, motivation and immersion can help you see others more clearly.

What is Trauma Focused Therapy

Photo: Susan Wilkinson

Trauma focused therapy in Langley allows individuals who have experienced
trauma to overcome their anxiety by safely exposing themselves to perceived
fears.

Trauma focused approach emerged in response to research
demonstrating that trauma is common and that it is highly
correlated with mental health.

Dr. Michael Dadson identifies:

Research has shown that there’s three primary phases, not stages,

but three primary phases or treatment. All three phases all always active

in therapy but, one phase will be accented or forefront at different times

in treatment. Usually at the beginning of therapy Phase one is more actively

present and towards the end phase three is more present. Dr. Dadson outlines

the 3 phases on his trauma therapy clinic webiste here.

Teen Suicide is a Serious Issue

Photo: Dan Meyers

Parents, teachers, and caregivers can use these tools to spot the warning signs, start important conversations, and learn when to seek help.

What are the warning signs?

Making suicidal statements
is a warning sign.

It is important to take suicidal statements seriously.

There are statements such as, “I could just die!” which are meaningless,

then there are calm statements made about ending one’s life that should always be

taken seriously.

Counselling is an important preventative intervention. When Teens are feeling depressed, have withdrawn from their social life, or have no desire for fulfilment in their life, counselling can help. Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is often a signal that core emotions like anger and sadness need to be expressed.

Doctor Michael Dadson (Mike Dadson) states:
“The cause of anxiety may be related to the belief that one’s sense of self is worthless, the belief and thinking that you have a low sense of self-worth, or that your value isn’t high”.

According to Dr. Michael Dadson, “Anxiety is a natural response to stress or repeated exposure stress or to a stressful incident.” Anxiety can also be accompanied by symptoms of depression or avoidance. Types of anxiety disorders include: generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, and agoraphobia.

Dr Dadson, also relays, “Anxiety disorders often involve excessive feelings or fear and anxiousness that are unnecessary or unwarranted."

Doctor Michael Dadson's counselling videos on anxiety and depression.

Psychology Today, notes, "Anxiety is miserable. And most people reach for a pill or push it away to reduce it. But if we think of anxiety as a signal or as the tip of an iceberg, we can take steps to more permanently ease it. Anxiety tells us deep biological programs called core emotions have been triggered out of conscious awareness. These core emotions are designed by evolution to be felt and expressed. When we push them away, we feel anxiety."
