National Truth and Reconciliation Day

September 30th 2021 marks Canada's first national holiday: Truth and Reconciliation Day

Events took place across Canada today from Newfoundland to BC. In White Rock BC, there was "a sea of orange"

Since 2013, September 30th, was designated as Orange Shirt Day in recognition of the horrific impacts residential schools (a colonialism concept), left behind and to bring awareness to the trauma children experienced in their "sense of self esteem", and as an affirmation of commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters"

Orange Shirt Day highlights the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Survivor of the residential school system, who was "stripped" of her shiny new orange shirt on the first day of school at the tender age of 6. Today, Philis is the Executive Director of Orange Shirt Society, sharing her story across the country and brining awareness to the tragedies of residential schools. She has diplomas in Business Administration (Nicola Valley Institute of Technology), and in Accounting from Thompson Rivers University.

Psychology Today on the most helpful therapies for PTSD Treatments.

                                                                        Photo:  Jonathan Rados

Studies show "trauma-focused treatments for PTSD are preferred by most patients".

A study recently published in Frontiers in Psychology, reviews several forms of treatment for PTSD and also provides insights into patients that prefer various treatments.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and prolonged exposure therapy are the two most preferred treatment forms overall. The study indicates older patients prefer psychodynamic treatments..

Dr. Michael Dadson (Mike Dadson) states, Symptoms of trauma usually start within three months of a traumatic incident. It has been reported, in rare cases, that symptoms of PTSD may only occur after a number of years. It is not uncommon for symptoms to be present for a short period, then disappear, only to return again.”

1. Overccoming behaviours that are self-destructive.

2. Manging your emotions and overcoming anger issues.

3. Reducing your risk of physical health issues.

Dr. Michael Dadosn discusses unresolved trauma in the video above.

There are 3 phases to trauma treatment.

1. Establishing a theraputic relationship between the therapist the client while developing an understanding the client's current life context and relationships.

2. Through titration and imaginal exposure therapy to process the traumatic memory.

3. The third phase involves greiving the effect of the trauma.

Dr. Dadson has discovered through his research that men respond well to group therapy. Dr. Dadson provides an overview of his group therapy program at his Langley clinic, Gentle Currents Therapy. Read about the Men's Group Program here.

In the short video below, Dr. Michael Dadson provides an overview of the effects of PTSD, and why treatment is important.

Improving Outcomes With Autism

A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics, significant benefits were shown with a teaching program for parental engagement with babies identified as high risk for autism spectrum disorder. (ASD).

                                                                         Photo: Shirota Yuri

Studies have shown intervention at 2 years of life, can improve outcomes for children.

The study states in a "clinical trial of 103 infants showing early behavioral signs of ASD, preemptive intervention led to a statistically significant reduction in the severity of ASD behaviors across early childhood. Infants who received the preemptive intervention had lower odds of meeting diagnostic criteria for ASD (7%) than those who received usual care (21%) at age 3 years."

If you are dealing with challenges around a child affected by ASD and are looking for coping skills and support contact Dr. Mike Dadson here.

Dr. Dadson has been Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) since 2000, with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, with significant experience dealing with trauma with several publications and academic works.

Why People with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Are Quick to Cut People Out of Their Lives.

                                    Photo: Andree Hunter

Previous research has shown that cutting a large number of people out of one's life takes a toll in many ways.

According to Psychology Today:

One of the major disorders of personality, attributed to problems during development, is borderline personality, (BPD) characterized by a tendency to quickly and often unpredictably oscillate between love and hate for others, subpar emotional regulation, and consistent problems in interpersonal relationships (see Carlson et al., 2009).

Further, in a recent study (Sung et al., 2021), the author's hypothesis suggests “If impulsivity, borderline tendencies, risk-taking, and fast life history strategy were all present in an individual's personality, then this would lead to a higher number of estrangements in that individual’s life” . Findings suggest “The more borderline tendencies someone had, the more estrangements he or she had in life”.
  •  What the impacts are when you estrange yourself from most of your social contacts
  • Studies suggest BPD (borderline personality disorder), is a predicting factor

Reserch published over the last 20 years are reviewed in the article “ The Role of Trauma in Early OnsetBorderline Personality Disorder” (Bozzatello et al., 2021) outlining the relationship role of childhood trauma and BPD.

What is Trauma Focused Therapy

Photo: Susan Wilkinson

Trauma focused therapy in Langley allows individuals who have experienced
trauma to overcome their anxiety by safely exposing themselves to perceived
fears.

Trauma focused approach emerged in response to research
demonstrating that trauma is common and that it is highly
correlated with mental health.

Dr. Michael Dadson identifies:

Research has shown that there’s three primary phases, not stages,

but three primary phases or treatment. All three phases all always active

in therapy but, one phase will be accented or forefront at different times

in treatment. Usually at the beginning of therapy Phase one is more actively

present and towards the end phase three is more present. Dr. Dadson outlines

the 3 phases on his trauma therapy clinic webiste here.

Teen Suicide is a Serious Issue

Photo: Dan Meyers

Parents, teachers, and caregivers can use these tools to spot the warning signs, start important conversations, and learn when to seek help.

What are the warning signs?

Making suicidal statements
is a warning sign.

It is important to take suicidal statements seriously.

There are statements such as, “I could just die!” which are meaningless,

then there are calm statements made about ending one’s life that should always be

taken seriously.

Counselling is an important preventative intervention. When Teens are feeling depressed, have withdrawn from their social life, or have no desire for fulfilment in their life, counselling can help. To understand Dr. Mike Dadson's counselling philosophy and approach, follow this link to a short video.

Understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

What is PTSD?
According to Doctor Michael Dadson (Mike Dadson),

"PTSD is considered to be one of the mood/anxiety disorders that arise when the survival instincts are activated due to a sense of terror, powerlessness, helplessness or horror are experienced. This psychological experience is so difficult for a person, they need to avoid entering into it."

Dr. Michael Dadson discusses trauma in this counselling video.

 “
Symptoms of trauma usually start within three months of a traumatic incident. It has been reported, in rare cases, that symptoms of PTSD may only occur after a number of years. It is not uncommon for symptoms to be present for a short period, then disappear, only to return again” states Dr. Michael Dadson (Mike Dadson).

"Symptoms of PTSD may increase if new stressors arise in a person's life and serve as a mental reminder of an incident that was traumatic", explains Dr Dadson.

As the former Executive Director for the Veteran’s Transition Network, Doctor Mike Dadson was instrumental in conducting PTSD, trauma and Dissociation research and the subsequent publication of research findings.
